Everything you need to know before your first appointment.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has completed specialised postgraduate training in mental health. As a qualified medical professional, Dr Strydom can assess both the physical and psychological aspects of a mental health condition, make diagnoses, prescribe and manage medication, and provide psychotherapy-informed care. Psychiatrists differ from psychologists in that they hold a medical degree and are able to prescribe medication.
No referral is required to book an appointment. You are welcome to contact the practice directly. However, if you are covered by a medical aid scheme, your scheme may require a GP referral before psychiatric benefits apply — we recommend checking with your scheme beforehand to confirm your benefits and any requirements.
Your first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric assessment. Dr Strydom will take time to understand your personal history, current symptoms, and life context — including your physical health, family background, relationships, and any previous treatment. This thorough evaluation forms the foundation for an accurate diagnosis and an individualised treatment plan tailored to your needs.
Initial assessment appointments are typically 60 to 90 minutes to allow sufficient time for a thorough evaluation. Follow-up appointments are generally 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the nature of your ongoing care. Dr Strydom prioritises unhurried, thoughtful consultations so that you always feel heard.
Not necessarily. Medication is one tool among many and is only recommended when clinically appropriate. Some patients benefit from medication, others from psychotherapy or supportive interventions, and many from a thoughtful combination of both. Dr Strydom takes an individualised approach, discussing all options with you and respecting your preferences in every treatment decision.
Yes. Everything discussed in your sessions is strictly confidential and protected by professional ethical standards and South African law. Exceptions to confidentiality are limited and prescribed by law — for example, where there is a serious and imminent risk of harm to yourself or others. These limits will be clearly explained to you during your first appointment.
Yes. Dr Strydom has a particular interest in child and adolescent psychiatry and sees patients from childhood through to adulthood. Early intervention in younger patients can have a profound and lasting impact on long-term wellbeing and development. Where appropriate, parents or caregivers are involved as partners in the treatment process.
Yes, Dr Strydom accepts both private (self-pay) patients and patients with medical aid. Claims can be submitted directly to your medical aid scheme on your behalf, subject to your plan's out-of-hospital psychiatric benefits. We recommend contacting your scheme beforehand to confirm your benefits and any co-payment that may apply.
You can book an appointment by completing the contact form on our Contact page, or by phoning or emailing the practice directly. We aim to respond to all enquiries within one business day. We look forward to hearing from you.
